Komnas HAM Response to Viral Video Alleging Torture of Civilians in Papua

The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has received information regarding a viral video on social media alleging torture of civilians in Papua. Based on initial information gathered by Komnas HAM, the incident is alleged to have occurred in Puncak Regency, Central Papua Province.

Komnas HAM regrets the incident as it adds to the chain of victims of violence due to conflict in Papua, which is suspected to be torture by officers. Komnas HAM hopes that the government and law enforcement officials will carry out a transparent and just law enforcement process for this case.

Komnas HAM continues to urge the government to improve its security approach in Papua in order to reduce the intensity of violence and avoid casualties. However, Komnas HAM also reiterates that the use of violence in political movements cannot be justified. Therefore, Komnas HAM calls on all parties to exercise restraint to prevent escalation of conflict in Papua.

In connection with this case, Komnas HAM will conduct monitoring to obtain more complete information on the incident, as mandated by Komnas HAM.
